Sarah Willey // Artful Expressions Speech TherapY
WHY I GOT INTO THE BIZ / WHAT INSPIRES ME:
Founded in 2017, Artful Expressions is the result of planning, passion, and persistence by two professionals. Both Sarah and Amanda, seasoned Speech-Language Pathologists, who met through their backgrounds in healthcare management, had been working in two different school districts on opposite coasts. Through conversations, both had noticed the same trend, with an increased workload in the school setting, it was getting difficult to adequately address the pragmatic language and executive functioning needs of the students on their caseloads. Through these discussions, the concept for Camp Ausome was born.
They also noticed another population that was underserved in the Olympia, WA area. Individuals on the Gender Spectrum, seeking to create a voice with which they feel a connection, were driving to Portland, OR or Seattle, WA. Both Sarah and Amanda have the Voice Training and passion to serve this group of individuals.
Sarah and Amanda both firmly believe that the basic building block of good communication is the feeling that every human being is unique and of value. We strive to help everyone who comes through our doors discover their value and strengths. Our practice is founded on the concept of neurodiversity. We do not work to change the individual. We are a growing group of like-minded Speech-Language Pathologists who believe that the emotional well-being of the child supersedes mandating "compliant" behavior. We are autistic allies who assert that all behavior is communication, and that sometimes behavior is the only communication a child may have the ability to produce at that particular moment. We advocate neurodiversity, self-determination, dignity, respect of individual rights, sensory preferences, and the power to say "no". Above all, we seek to understand the reason behind our clients' behaviors. While supporting the child's emotional well-being, we provide them with therapy to expand their communication in meaningful and functional ways, and in the manners which best work and are most natural for the child.
